I think this might be one of my new favorite restaurants in SF. Beautiful interior that is at once Californian and Japanese. Lunch set was wonderful (+those gyoza!). Would love to return for dinner menu.

Delicious Indian, more complexity and depth of flavor than you'd expect from such a casual outfit.

Really impressed by the flavor intensity and complexity. By far the best Indian flavors I've had since coming to SF. my only disappointment was that the wraps were closer to the tortilla end of the paratha-tortilla spectrum. I guess that's what they mean by their 'ethnic confusion' tag line...

Modern Chinese culinary emporium with a spacious set of communal tables to enjoy dumplings, Peking duck, and a variety of regional specialties, along with a fairly extensive tea selection and a full cocktail bar. Chinese specialty ingredients and kitchenwares available in a retail space adjacent to the dining room.

The rustic cool interior and creative menu make this a new anchor for Hayes Valley, and their consistently excellent execution makes it one of my favorite spots in the city. The pastas are notable. Great wine list and cocktails as well. Grab a seat at the bar if you can't snag a reservation; it's reserved for walk-ins and you can enjoy the full menu there.

Nice homemade ice-cream, but really it's the freshly baked cones touched with cinnamon that make this place worth a visit.

Dramatic coastline without even leaving city limits. Take the side trails down to the rock beaches and you might discover the stone labyrinth overlooking the Golden Gate.

Good cafe option in this neighborhood - bright, with a nice selection of salads, homey baked goods, and toasts on freshly baked bread. Fig walnut toast with ricotta and honey...

Historic building worth checking out before a drink at the Arguello (restaurant/bar with a great outdoor terrace).

One of my favorite restaurants; the more casual sister to Quince next door. Classic Italian cuisine in a welcoming space with clean lines and natural wood surfaces. Excellent pasta and pizza. Strikes an ideal balance for SF, which also makes it one of the toughest tables to get. Pictured: wild nettle sformata.

My new favorite Italian in SF. An emphasis on local ingredients and some more unusual pairings that verge on wider-Med influences (tomatoes, yogurt, pomegranate seeds...). Homemade pasta was excellent. Sit outside to enjoy the quiet, leafy street scene.

Factory showroom for traditional Californian ceramics. I love their selection of art and design books and magazines, perfectly placed across from a long, low couch. Blue bottle coffee, a lovely florist, and art gallery/exhibition space also in the same building makes it feel like a real community gathering spot.

Get 'The Plow' to experience it all. Go early and on a weekday to avoid the crazy long waits.

Really wonderful California-inspired Italian. Delicious polpette seasoned perfectly. The homemade pasta (a special - spot prawn over chitarra nero) was also done beautifully. Try the chocolate-hazelnut budino before you leave...

Exceptional North African cuisine in a low-lit, atmospheric setting. Pastilla was memorable on both occasions I've had dinner there.

The teleme scarpinocc with aceto balsamico transported me back to the cheese room of a parmigiano maker near Modena. Needless to say, most pastas are quite outstanding, and even the non-flour-based dishes can shine.
