• BLACOWS (ブラッカウズ)

100% Wagyu Beef Burger. Absolutely delicious! It's worth taking a brief break from all of the wonderful Japanese food to get a taste of this.

This shouldn't take the place of a Japanese meal if time is limited, but if you're craving a burger in Tokyo this is the place to get it. Surprisingly (delightfully) un-dainty.

  • Bar Benfiddich

This is a bar that makes it's own version of Campari right in front of you by grinding their own botanicals in a mortar and pestle! It's fascinating to watch and is the main component to the best Negroni you will ever have!

Want to go. Makes their own Campari. Near Shinjuku station.

  • Sawada (さわ田)

If you go, you really want to be with someone who speaks Japanese. The owners want you to be with someone who speaks Japanese. Sushi is about the back and forth exchange, about watching what you're about to eat so carefully prepared in front of you and telling them how much you enjoyed it. This is where such a tradition is taken very seriously. Absolute top of the line ingredients. And once you get past some gruffness, a very nice husband and wife team.

  • Torishiki (鳥しき)

Ridiculous how difficult it is to get in. But this is yakitori at its apex. And I say that despite my favorite bite likely being the grilled okra. Ask for the yaki onigiri. Get the oyako don. Order a bento or two for the next day. This is what you came to Tokyo for.

  • Fu-unji (風雲児)

Spent many months eating many bowls of ramen. This comes out on top. Beautifully blended bowl of tsukemen. Surprisingly packed with tender chunks of braised pork. Absolute perfection.
