Passionate, exquisite cooking from Joshua Skenes, many elements influenced by kaiseki cuisine as well as cooking from the hearth. The liquid toast (pictured) reveals more flavor in one bite than you may think possible for mere mortals to taste. Renowned, Burgundy-heavy wine list curated by Mark Bright. Their new home is a stunning 19th century brick building in SoMA which features an open dining room, plus an incredible cocktail program. Along with Benu, the first SF restaurant to receive a third Michelin star.
Yikes, this place went downhill fast. Nominally-Basque tapas from Michael Chiarello, slow to non-existent service, bland dishes. A shadow of the restaurant it was a year ago. Maybe a fluke, but I won't be going back again soon. If you want great tapas and pintxos, go to Aatxe - it's worth the detour.
Fantastic place for massage, in an unassuming location. Had a truly transformational treatment from Gitama. Photo via @evo_spa on Instagram.
Mieze is one of my favorite massage therapists in San Francisco. This is a humble temple to bodywork, not a spa, but simple in the best way possible; she brings good, grounded energy and intuition to each session, as well as an excellent soundtrack.

California small plates meets dim sum. Beautiful plating, and a creative way to see the food you want to eat before you order. A theme like this can feel like a gimmick but it truly works here, and they consistently deliver delicious food. The hype is unreal, but do try to snag a reservation if you can (or line up *very* early as a walk-in). Their encore next door, The Progress, is very good as well.

Stunning when the sun is out, but always bring a coat. Worth a walk through the dunes on the south side. Bonfires at night in the summer are incredible.
Public space on the 11th floor. Stunning view. Open M-F 9-5.
Sublime Thai massages. Sixty dollars for sixty minutes. Can reserve online but they accept walk-ins too.
Joanna says they do excellent Thai massage. Want to go.
Japanese communal baths, spa and massage. Baths alternate days between genders (women Sun/Wed/Fri, men Mon/Thu/Sat, coed Tue). Want to go.
Don't be fooled by the divey-looking Lung Shan restaurant exterior, Danny Bowien cooks some delicious Chinese food here. Generous portions, and they really give back to the neighborhood. Just watch out for General Tso's veal rib! Delicious but possibly the hottest dish I've ever eaten...
Yoga @ its core
Want to go.
Ravi Kapur serving up Hawaiian-inspired deliciousness in a bright new space. The beef tongue buns and the squid tripe salad are incredible.
Enjoy.

The Market on Market: local grocery, plus a number of prepared and hot food options. I'd go for the sushi bar, or Azalina's in the back. The hot bar now includes some of Azalina's curries too!
Delicious Roman 'pinsa', the peasant precursor to pizza. Unique dough keeps it crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside.
Super tiny space, big flavor. The pita is freshly made, but not necessarily made from scratch.
That looks like one tasty falafel. Want to go.
Great office.
Old school Chinese herbalist recommended by Caroline.
Casual cool Hayes Valley (that hits the) spot. Wonderful play on iconic souvlaki, with roasted lamb - or chicken, pork or sweet potato - as a sandwich or salad. You won't regret ordering it 'Greek style' with fries inside. The Greek frozen yogurt with baklava crumbles is dangerous.
Would love to try their nitro cold brew.
Hidden gem containing old maps and plans for San Francisco (found via Detour's Making Market Street walk)
Would love to check out their historic maps of (and plans for) San Francisco.
Cocktails outside
Expansive bar with plenty of outdoor space, run by a seriously pedigreed team; they've worked at just about every cocktail bar of note in SF. Focus on quality of cocktails, not pretense. Eight beers on tap; pitchers, punch bowls and sangritas also on the menu.
Opened Feb 2015. Nice cafe brewing De La Paz and Four Barrel in a part of sunset where this was absolutely needed! Excellent baked good and of course, they toast.
Want to go.
Classic brasserie. A good late night option to know.
Carne Asada
Classic Mission burrito spot and finalist in Five Thirty Eight's epic competition for 'Best Burrito in America'. Want to go.
Perch on a stone bench across the alley and enjoy an espresso at the original Blue Bottle.
Unique foraged and gleaned flora, as well as locally made pottery - I believe by appointment only. Side note: Louesa also started August many years ago in Rockridge, an incredible and pioneering clothing store that featured a lot of emerging American designers (I really wish that shop was still around).
Cliff says I have to try the coconut curry hot chocolate (light on the curry).
Mens and women's clothing, pretty well-edited selection. On the brighter, more accessible side of hipsterdom than Acrimony down the street. APC, Rag and Bone next to Vans, lots of Nudie Jeans.
Go for the deep dish.
Modern urban women's and men's clothing - think Wings + Horns, Opening Ceremony, Cote & Ciel.
To showcase their minimal activewear on a tiny sliver of a lot in Hayes Valley, Aether makes ingenious use of shipping containers to create a lofty space.

'The Mexican cuisine of Val M. Cantu.' One of the most avant garde tasting menus in SF right now, from chefs with serious pedigrees.
Such delicious pie! Seriously some of the best in the bay. Try a slice at their farmers market stand on Saturdays.
I hear they do great drinks and small plates. Want to go.
Nice new cafe and roastery in a converted warehouse space. I think their espresso roast is a little deeper than Sightglass.
Solid Thai in a cool industrial space. Service can be slow, but it's a decent option for the area.
Second Salumeria location, tucked inside the Hamm's Building. Light breakfast menu, salads and sandwiches at lunch, plus fresh juice. Delicious.
Pizza champion Tony Gemignani's temple to the pizza oven, four of them to be precise. 'No reservations, no exceptions'. They do delivery too. Still haven't been!
The Bourbon and Branch crew take on the Barbary Coast with a Gold Rush era cocktail menu that works well. One of the bartenders at Kin Khao also works here, and she knows what she's doing.
The iconic Art Deco bar of North Beach, given new life with a full food menu thanks to April Bloomfield. I'd still consider it more for drinks, but it's a good late night option to know. Their updated 'cappuccino' is a must.
Want to go. New upscale/avant garde dim sum from the Koi Palace. Turns into hot pot restaurant at night (hot pots at Koi Palace were supposed to be quite good).
Contemporary dim sum from the Koi Palace folks. Want to go.
Best Irish coffee!
The original home of the Irish Coffee. Touristy but supposed to be worth a visit.
Fine dining in Presidio Heights. Luxurious setting, clubby with a bit of a buzz. Surprisingly good option for a takeout burger as well.
Consistently good Italian, with a touch of New York atmosphere. Perch up at the marble bar for a bite and a cocktail; the dining room is great space for a special occasion or business meeting.
Sōw much delicious juice, made to order. Try the Hero when it's in season - it makes me feel like I can scale tall buildings.
Truly incredible tacos. Pop-up-in-Tartine, open on occasional Tue and Fri and nights, keep an eye out @eatloqui on Twitter and act fast! They're usually sold out before 9.
Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski's encore to State Bird, located next door. Beautiful space, beautiful food, lives up to the concept of a 'choose your own adventure' tasting menu.
Chicken wings as candy. Aggressively, deeply fried. Perfect for when I really want to let myself go.
Want to try the legendary dry-fried chicken wings.
An SF classic. Love the architecture, lobby bar is good for meetings - grab a drink or sit down for a couple hours' work.
The anchor restaurant and bar in the Ritz Carlton, more casual than The Dining Room which preceded it. Solid cooking, though atmosphere is too corporate for my taste.
Quite possibly the best bread you will find anywhere, reserve in advance or show up around 5pm. Incredible pastries too. My favorite is the pain au jambon.
The legendary locavore market that in many ways anchored the Mission as the place for great food in SF. You won't believe how much variety they can pack in one small space. One of the best curated selections of food I've seen in the world.
Great community events space; hosts a number of interesting wine tastings in collaboration with Bi-Rite (like their seasonal wine blitz) and Thursday happy hour (with snacks and Tartine bread).
Just go. Brave the line for their celebrated ice cream (esp. the sundaes), or skip it and buy a prepacked pint. Many wonderful flavors; salted caramel is a revelation.
Cool bike-inspired bags.
A classic Presidio space with a throwback menu. Wouldn't go out of the way for the food, but a bite and a drink on the back patio really hit the spot.
Khao soi is decent! Also good: crispy catfish with green beans and chili paste. A nice setting, look out for the TV slideshow of EVERY SINGLE DISH on their menu.
Want to try the crispy catfish and khao soi.
Allen says they do a good wonton soup. Want to go.
Supposed to be a great spot for cocktails. Want to go.
Classic, art deco dive bar. The kind of place that makes Anthony Bourdain yearn for San Francisco. Want to go.
Modern American fine dining, seated communally, dinner-party style. Chef David gets every detail of experience and dishes right. Dinner starts at mezzanine where people mingle with snacks and cocktails on their hands. After that, people are invited to the dining tables where main courses are served. Chefs tell us about dishes as they are served. The kitchen is open and people are encouraged to socialize with chefs while they are cooking.
Tasting menu and a bit of kitchen theater in one. Went to one of the original pop-up dinners, definitely curious to try their permanent location.
Sister restaurant to Brenda's French Soul Food, a creole restaurant in Tenderloin, this newer eatery serves hearty Southern fare for breakfast and lunch, meat & 3 plates at dinner. I recommend.
And here I thought I'd never see a meat and three on the West Coast...Want to go.
Delicious home made savory and sweet pop tarts!
Nice neighborhood cafe, Sightglass coffee, tasty savory bites.
Consistently one of the best all-around dining experiences I know, and my quintessential SF restaurant. Incredibly welcoming staff and warm atmosphere is a perfect match with stunning yet unpretentious food. Reserve *well* in advance, or try the counter seats reserved for walk-ins. Enjoy!
Mourad Lahlou's downtown follow-up to Aziza, his successful (Michelin-starred) modern twist on Moroccan. Beautiful space, exquisite plating.
Members' club with squash courts. Right at the intersection of the two cable car lines.
Stunning landmark in Nob Hill, worth visiting for the architecture and the labyrinth inside. They also host donation-based yoga on Tuesdays at 6pm - #onlyinSF. Via Chelsea Rustrum.
Ryan ventures here from Napa for their Szechuan cooking. Repeatedly. Now a Bib Gourmand for 2015.
Saw a local art exhibition hosted in the rooms here - looks like the closest answer in SF to an Ace Hotel right now. Cool renovation of an old space. Via Hotel Tonight.
The takeout counter for Slanted Door, great option in the Ferry Building for a quick lunch. Personal favorites are the green papaya salad, banh mi, and lemongrass pork (with rice on cold days, vermicelli on warm days).
Bruce Beasley's studio, a West Oakland space he rehabilitated from an old grist mill, now bequeathed to the Oakland Museum. Can't wait to go for the SPUR Oakland launch on Feb 12.
San Francisco's oldest nightclub, a classic small venue that's hosted incredible jazz and rock bands. Saw a fun show here featuring my friend's band, Man In Space.
The oldest cinema in SF, lots of great indie screenings.

Beer + dogs
Want to go! Classic space given new life.
Great curry rice. Want to try more ramen varieties.

One might call this a modernist soda fountain, given the extensive set of tinctures and extracts they offer as toppings. However, the interior is all original 1930's and they've brought back a number of old-time classics, like phosphates and lactarts. Now serving up some boozy creations as well. Open noon - 10pm daily.
Izakaya, sushi, and the largest selection of whisky on the West Coast.
Beautiful Mexican food, complex flavors, well-sourced ingredients.
Fantastic performances here from Pop-Up Magazine to live film scores to chamber music. Insider tip: order your drinks at the bar before the performance and they'll have them ready for you at intermission.
Sounds like a nice brunch spot, New American with some southeast Asian influences.
Amazingly good. The omakase is a steal considering the quality.
Want to try their omakase.

The views are supposed to be incredible. Want to go.

Zen community, tea house and working farm in a stunning, lush valley overlooking the Pacific; this is one of the most grounding spaces I know, and one of the reasons I'm so grateful to call the Bay Area home. Open for public meditation on Sundays, as well as longer sittings and retreats throughout the year. Also offers a guest house and conference space. I must try staying at Hope Cottage.
Josey Baker Bread and Fourbarrel in a beautiful bright open space. Need I say more? Oh, open daily 7am-7pm (9pm on Mondays for Pizza Night).
A classic spot for Mexican fixings, including multiple kinds of masa to make your own tortillas. Fond memories of Tina Dang bringing La Palma up to Hattery for tacos on Fridays.
Bistro recommended by my French cab driver, says it's classic Lyonnais.
A pocket cafe in the Mission.
Of all the jook joints in the marina...I'd like to go here. Via @paololucchesi on Instagram.
Head here for a casual pint with work buddies; you'll spot it by the outdoor benches filling the alley. Interior is pretty authentic too.

Love this short but steep trail on the backside of Mt. Tam off the Bolinas-Fairfax Road. Hike to the top and picnic at Laurel Dell. Waterfalls are year round, but best after a heavy rain
Want to check out this waterfall trail on the backside of Mt Tam. Short but steep.
Great men's clothing store, everything made in the US, many items from CA and even SF. Mostly casual classics, also custom shirts made to order with extensive fabric and customization options. Open 11-7 every day.
Beautiful modern cafe in a flatiron storefront on Columbus. Lots of light.
Their original coffee truck is here near Jackson Square, now joined by brick and mortar cafes in North Beach and the Castro. Open Mon-Fri 7:30a-4p. Want to go.
Former chef from Sushi Ran, keiseki menu only. Nicely done.
One of my favorite restaurants; the more casual sister to Quince next door. Classic Italian cuisine in a welcoming space with clean lines and natural wood surfaces. Excellent pasta and pizza. Strikes an ideal balance for SF, which also makes it one of the toughest tables to get. Pictured: wild nettle sformata.
The tower that defines the city skyline. Stunning from any angle.
I come here for the amazing pastas and to admire Michael and Lindsay Tusk's eclectic and enviable art collection on the walls. Recent renovation. Cooking has climbed a notch up. Reaching hard for that third Michelin star, and it's noticeable. I recommend.
Michael Tusk's temple to Italian food, elevating pasta (among many other things) to a true art. Two Michelin stars, with a recent refurb that aims to take them higher. Service and setting has long been on the formal side, especially for SF; would like to try the latest incarnation of the dining room.
Menswear, tailoring, shoe shine and barber services for gentlemen; now a wine and spirits shop in the back as well, with a surprisingly good selection (and without a painful markup).
Seafood paella.
Want to go. Zagat top 50.

Enjoy places. Not too many. Mostly remarkable ones.
Classic bar downtown, floor to ceiling wood interior recently restored by Dennis Leary. Solid drinks. Open until 2am everyday.
Great sandwich counter, list changes daily. Just about everything made in-house, including the cookies and drinks. From Dennis Leary, the man behind Canteen, Golden West and the restored House of Shields.

For your Apple fix (it).
Highly recommended by Lauren Williams. Still need to try it!
Store full of natural curiosities; great collection of small exotic plants, fossils and minerals.
Bean-to-bar chocolate maker, serving some of the most tempting chocolate desserts I've ever seen. And the shake with cacao fruit? That is something special.
THE place for electric bikes. You should really stop by if you want to learn more.
A most curious Icelandic cargo ship - the crew and the crowd at an event here are inevitably fascinating.
Just heard some great live jazz here.
Exquisitely-curated food counter and beautiful kitchen with seating for (a very nice) breakfast and lunch. Their pistachio macaroons and canelés are my addiction.
Say yes to brunch. And every other meal of the day here. One of the best late night options in SF. And one of the best things about the city, too.
Beyond their excellent olive oil, this place has incredible fresh produce. It's so beautiful I swear most people think it's just a display. Definitely stop by.
If you're eating bacon at my house, it's coming from here. I also love the stuffed quail they offer from time to time.
Want to try their chirashi bowl for a quick lunch (only open Wed-Fri).
New Indian food truck, looks like they do a great Chicken Biryani!
Ai Weiwei exhibition now on until April 2015. A moving testament to prisoners of conscience around the world, with visual metaphors juxtaposing their lofty ideals with physical confinement; every visitor is also invited to be part of the story at the end. You must go.
Modern Japanese, sister to Roka and Zuma in London. Delicious if spendy. Do try the uni and chicharrones.
A San Francisco classic. The roast chicken is legendary for good reason. On a warm day, the open air tables transport me to the south of France.
Furikake fries and brussels are great, chicken was surprisingly good. A portion to split!
The crown jewel of the Julia Morgan-designed Fairmont. The Moroccan room may be my favorite space in all of San Francisco.
Hole-in-the-wall sushi joint, impossibly small and well-worn, run by the most adorable elderly Japanese couple you may ever meet. Not my top sushi in SF, but portions are obscenely generous, and the overall experience makes it well worthwhile.
Inventive, passionate cooking from Dominque Crenn, the first female chef in North America with two Michelin stars. The interior harkens back to her summers on the Ile de Ré, the menu a poem in courses.
Well crafted cocktails in a great bar setting, reasonably priced Italian, thin crust pizza, open late!
Solid French bistro. Nice atmosphere, especially outside on a nice day. So so coffee.
Good vegetarian Japanese, and quite reasonable. Interior is a little sparse, but excellent spot for lunch.
A good place to know for a bite in the neighborhood.

Hits the spot for a quick burger. The beef is Niman Ranch, the soft serve is Strauss organic. (13 Jun 2014)
SF fast food. Delicious burgers and soft serve (using Strauss Organic). Many locations - this one on Mission between 3rd and 4th. (12 Nov 2014)
Just about the tastiest burgers I know. Your best option near Fisherman's Wharf short of Gary Danko (not even kidding).
Wonderful pomegranates this week. Known for their stone fruit, in season. Also love their raisins.
Best enjoyed in even years! Go Giants!!
Classic bar and brasserie, tucked away on a side street near Jackson Square. More about the atmosphere than the food in my experience, but a good option if you're in the area.
Doesn't look like much on the outside, but they make quite a tasty quesadilla here.
Meliza waxes poetic about their Moroccan lamb sandwich. Want to go.
Upscale men's barber, plus retro hipster clothing boutique. Cool atmosphere, though I hear the quality of the cuts is mixed (no reservations taken).
A perennial favorite of many friends. Has a courtyard inside where they project old films onto the wall, a nice stylistic touch. Brunch is an institution.
Attention to detail

Great atmosphere, steampunk decor, and great cocktails. If you want chill, avoid it on a Giants night
Antonio pegs it - good spot for cocktails but gets noisy on a game night.

Reminds me a little of Wayfare Tavern from the outside, not a bad spot for a business lunch or quick drink.
A downtown classic. Fried chicken is famous for a reason. I'd grab a seat at the chef's counter (pictured).
Incredible oysters, seafood, cocktails and everything else. Their hog wine (a Gruner/Albariño blend) is a nice pairing.
I love that no one really speaks English in this restaurant - makes me feel like I've quickly traveled to Italy for a delicious meal!
Sounds like a charmingly authentic North Beach option, which I've had a hard time finding! Want to go.

Old school Nob Hill institution, especially the bar. Still need to check it out post-remodel.
The penthouse, designed by Julia Morgan shortly after the 1906 earthquake, is one of the architectural gems of San Francisco.
New American, tasting menu, one Michelin star. Went to the restaurant twice in the early days, was good but I found dishes were better composed at Commonwealth. Must try it again.
Cocktail lounge from the folks at Bourbon & Branch, no reservations required. Subterranean space isn't amazing but drinks are good.
New bar, food by Little Skillet
